A Kumho tyre has enjoyed success in Choice magazine's annual tyre test for the second consecutive year.
Kumho's Powermax 769 shared the best overall score with one other tyre in the Australian Consumers Association magazine's survey of 185/65R14-sized tyres suitable for small cars.
The same Kumho model, tested in a larger 205/65R15 size suitable for family cars, won the survey outright in 2002.
The Powermax 769, which retails for less than $100, was also the least expensive of the three tyre models which received a recommendation from Choice in the latest test.
The respected magazine compared nine widely available mid-range tyre models in the popular 185/65R14 size from Continental, Dunlop, Firestone, Goodyear, GT, Kumho, Olympic, Toyo and Yokohama.
Kumho's Powermax 769 performed best in lane-keeping tests, holding its line safely at 80km/h in dry conditions and 70km/h in wet without drifting, while other models did not.
Choice said it found considerable differences between the tyre brands in cornering and braking tests, warning that in an emergency they could make the difference in trying to avoid an accident.
The success of Kumho tyres in different sizes in different years confirms the benefits of Kumho's ongoing investment in research and development, according to Kumho Australia's national marketing manager, Steve Yeom.
